Unique Lighting Creations: When Everyday Objects Become Extraordinary Lights

There is a certain kind of object that resists being thrown away. A vintage camera with a beautiful lens. A piece of scientific equipment with dials and gauges that still catch the light. A Bakelite device whose form is so resolved, so complete, that discarding it feels like a small act of vandalism.

At It's a Light, we've spent years finding these objects — and turning them into lamps.

What the Unique Lighting Creations Range Is

The Unique Lighting Creations range is exactly what it sounds like: a collection of one-of-a-kind lights, each built around a single found object that had the right combination of character, form, and material to make the conversion worthwhile. No two pieces are alike. Once sold, they're gone.

The objects we work with tend to share certain qualities: strong silhouettes, interesting textures, and a sense of having been made with care — whether that's the precision of a scientific instrument, the craftsmanship of a vintage camera body, or the industrial logic of a piece of equipment designed to do a specific job well.

A Few Pieces from the Archive

The Bencini Comet Hyper Flash is built around a 1950s Italian camera flash unit — a striking object in its own right, with a bold geometric form and the kind of chrome finish that only comes with age. As a table lamp, it has an immediate presence: part design object, part conversation piece.

The Irradiator takes its name from its appearance — a piece of vintage scientific equipment that looks exactly like something from a mid-century laboratory. The form is architectural, the materials are serious, and lit from within it has a quality that's difficult to describe and impossible to replicate.

The Signaller began life as a railway or military signalling device. Its functional origins are still legible — the robust construction, the purposeful shape — but repurposed as a lamp it reads as something altogether more considered.

Mr Mussel is perhaps the most purely playful piece in the archive: an uplighter built around a large mussel bucket, mounted and wired so that the light spills upward through the bucket's interior. It shouldn't work. It does.

Why These Pieces Exist

The honest answer is that we make them because we can't not. When the right object comes along — the right form, the right condition, the right possibility — it becomes very difficult to imagine it ending up anywhere other than as a lamp.

The longer answer is that these pieces do something that a standard fitting, however well designed, cannot: they carry a history. They were made for a specific purpose, in a specific time and place, by people who cared about how they worked. That embedded quality doesn't disappear when they become lamps. If anything, the new context makes it more visible.

The Archive

All past Unique Lighting Creations pieces are documented in our Unique Lighting Creations Archive — a record of what's been made and sold, and a useful reference for the kind of objects and conversions we're drawn to. Current available pieces can be found in our table, floor and pendant lights collection.
